Good points Schaublin. Presumably, Iraq will still accept Sterling for oil?

Yes, good point. I suppose there isn’t enough of anything (not even one ounce bullion coins) to use as money if fiat becomes worthless. People did hoard them! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gresham's_law 26 grams pure silver. You’ve just proved that ounces are not as simple as you claim. Can you see your mistake? What country are you in? There are several

Very little will be easy and convenient IF society breaks down. The question is - "What is the easiest and what is the most convenient?"

British coins worked successfully as coins for many years and people will take to them very easily IMO. A lot of the older people I know often say, "Shilling", "10 Bob", "That's £5 in new money...." Many people still recognise the Shilling as 'the old 5p' and the Florin as 'the old 10p'. There are still 20 or 10 (respectively) of these coins in a £1. Once you remember this simple similarity, it is quite straight forward to remember that a 6d is half a Shilling and a 3d is half a 6d. A Crown is 5 Shillings. I have many one ounce billion coins. These have never been in circulation in the UK so people will not recognise them. IF TSHTF, I suspect a one ounce Britannia coin will be downgraded to a Crown. whilst some of the foreign coins will not be accepted at all.

Pre decimal coins are not GCT free as they are no longer Sterling 'currency'. BUT... the coins cannot be melted down legally in the UK as they are still Sterling 'coins' The 3d you are thinking of is a post 1937 brass coin. The silver 3d is round. Pre 1947 6d's are silver. Check out the website below Images from http://www.coinsgb.com/index.html ebay is the best place to get pre 1947 silver coins in my experience. They were selling pretty cheap last time I bought (around a year ago). The Sovereign* (8 grams) replaced the Guinea (8.4 grams) in/around 1817. Both coins were the official £1 coin of their time so they are both officially worth 20 Shillings. However, the Guinea contained more gold so it became a £1+1 Shilling coin after changeover to Sovereign (0.4 gold grams = 1 Shilling). Unofficially, the number of Shillings per Guinea varied depending on the value of gold. * There is an older Sovereign but my knowledge of coins doesn't go back far enough.

1920 to 1946 silver coins are 50% silver 1919 and previous are 92.5% sivler The best unit to remember is the Shilling. There are 20 Shillings in a pound (Guinea / Sovereign). A shilling is 12 pence. Silver coins are: 3d - 3 pence 6d - 6 pence (2 x 3d) Shilling - 12 pence (2 x 6d) Florin - 24 pence (2 x shilling) Half Crown - 30 pence (2.5 x shilling) Crown - 60 pence (5 x shilling) There are silver 1d, 2d & 4d (also called groat) knocking around. These were Maundy Money, not really intended for general circulation. You would get a good price for these if you got a nice one. Silver 3d was replaced with brass/nickel in 1937 for circulation. Maundy Money 3d stayed silver (I think)

I've picked up a few hundred thousand 3d and 6d from ebay for the same reason. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/100-Silver-Threepenc...id=p3286.c0.m14 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/50-x-6d-SIXPENCE-pre...id=p3286.c0.m14 EDIT: BTW, I'm not recommending either of the sellers. I haven't bought anything from them

Why are you looking at the 5 year chart and commenting on the last 6 months? Why not click the 6 months chart? YoY gold is up in all the currencies on the chart YTD (from Jan 09 Line on year chart) Gold seems to be up in all the currencies too Financial year (first week in April Line on 6 months chart) Gold is up in all the currencies again, maybe around the same in GBP and down a touch in CAD.

I would buy if I didn't have any silver. These prices will look dirt cheap in the future. I wouldn't swap my gold for silver at the moment. Gold is a lower risk currency. Most people here said they would swap silver for gold at 50:1 last time this was properly debated. I will be swapping a percentage of my silver for gold at 45:1, some more at 40:1, more at 35:1 and so on. I will only be doing this with my GoldMoney silver. I won't consider swapping my coins till we get to 15:1. I have no plans to trade my coins for another asset unless I am desperate. The money printing will never stop so I will keep holding my coins EDIT: Silver over $17/toz

It's going to be like this for the next 20 years IMO. Those who caused the mess have been rewarded and those who were prudent are being punished. It's going to get worse There will be more bailouts for the feckless and more taxes for the industrious.
