Explaining GEI's appeal ... to someone under 30 y.o.

Recommended Posts

Issues that may appeal to u/30's. Well we discuss a lot but is it mentioned in the following ways ?

House price (potential) crash = part of transfer of wealth from old to young

Government social security budgets = = part of transfer of wealth from young to old

I am sure there are more examples

Libertarian / Economic Lib. arguments = more likely to benefit younger people who will build something new, rather than the old who benefit from the status quo

The new normal, rise of BRIC's etc - what are the opportunities as well as the threats.

Voting never changes anything? OK then you need to protect yourself ;) OK I know we cover that point but still on balance maybe there is a reason that the type of dialogue on GEI doesnt appeal to younger members - maybe we dont talk about stuff that affects them in the way I outlined above. Many on GEI are interested in trying to protect their wealth, where as the young will be interested in trying to build wealth.

For the UK some of the above will enter general conciousness as the LibCon's try and force through budget cuts

Hmm.

I think that points out the uselessness of Facebook.

What does Peter Andre's facebook page do for him,

And what possible value of reading a page about Peter Andre deliver to anyone?

For Peter Andre Facebook etc is a win-win situation, because people relate to him as a person and not 'brand Peter'.

Whilst tweeting/ facing/ glomming about he can casually mention the latest tour and how tiring it is but exciting at the same time. Oh and the new fragrance is available such and such.

But tha's just him. Meanwhile for Shell and the rest of the top 25 of the Ftse 100, they make the mistake of thinking it's P.R-lite and so just alienate a lot of people by trying to make it Brand-centric. Boring.

Like gaming, or gambling, this activity sound to me like it is purely for amusement. If someone hit a switch, and turned it off,

would anyone really suffer? It is the 2010 equivalent of sitting in front of "the idiot box" watching gameshows.

To be fair, there is some interesting and useful stuffon there, mostly however it's a means of keeping in touch and having a laugh...and getting sacked for mootching...

THERE is almost nobody I can think of that will not be absorbed by Seven director David Fincher and writer Aaron Sorkin’s scarily well-made and well-acted film about the founding of Facebook..........................

new film out!

Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake is a shock-hit as Sean Parker, founder of Napster and mesmeric mentor to Zuckerberg. With his penchant for college girls and Victoria’s Secret models, he seduces the ever-dorky Zuckerberg with scary ease.

Despite, or rather because, of its brilliance, The Social Network leaves you with an uneasy feeling that Facebook came from a place that’s just as dark as it is energetic and creative. Zuckerberg, the film suggests, was motivated by anger and loneliness. He wanted to be in a Harvard final club (an elite male-only members’ club); he wanted social power and acceptance. What better way to stockpile power than to make everyone – including the sorority girls he could never pull – puppets in his cyber-show? This is a superb way to see how we, too, became part of his global network.

I like the idea of a GEI / GPC App. That would be very useful if it's possible.

I've been thinking about that one for a while.

I just wonder what it should cover?

What would it's purpose be?

What are the limitations of the form?

Perhaps fodder for another thread?

Good Luck.

I would be interested in hearing what people mean by this.

Are you talking about a phone App?

What sort of task would you expect it to do?

+ Deliver price data?

+ Deliver charts?

+ Facilitate a transaction?

+ Deliver a digest of comments here?

But my friends, they're just not interested. They just can't see how this kind of discussion is relevant to their daily lives.

I agree with this 100%. I think in the back of their mind they know they really ought to doing something but can't be bothered with it right now. "I'll get round to it one day" I would say is a common thought. Maybe they think that everything will be ok and someone or something is looking out for them.

The trigger for me was splitting with my girlfriend and taking the house on myself. Even though I was good with money anyway, I really had to sharpen up to make this work. Perhaps if that hadn't have happened, I would still be saying "I'll get round to it one day". I'm 36 BTW.

I think some of the ideas and discussions on GEI could be a bit too 'heavy' for the wider audience. Macro views, trading etc. might just put people off. What about a GEI 'lite' type of idea, whereby they can be introduced via talk of bank accounts, mortgages, pensions etc. Once interested in this general area, I am sure they will 'explore' further.

Essentially though, yes, Facebook appears to be the method for communicating with under 30's. Personally I hate it and have real concerns about privacy, covert data mining and generally the virtual panoptican that RH mentioned.

As savetheclaypigeon says - perhaps the long game is the right thing to do. People should come if TSHTF in their own world. You just need to ensure that it is here that they come here instead of anywhere else.

Happy days.

Last Night's (Friday 15th Oct 2010) Channel 4 (UK) show 'The Inbetweeners' had a perfect example of the use of Facebook by a lot of people.

Basically the group of sixth-form teenage lads spent their time hijacking each others avatars and changing each others passwaords to be as pornographic as possible.

Same thing they did to the local village's 'welcome' flowerbed.

Meanwhile central character's hot mother hooked up, via Facebook, with a guy she used to vaguely know and went away for a bit of hanky-panky.

The power of Social Media and all that.

That's about it Mabon.

I have a facebook account. I'm 40 and I use it for only 2 or three purposes.

The first is to store quick links to pages on sites (some that my friends or family may wish to visit or look at, some for myself). They're mainly social pages related to music, current affairs and local news.

Second, I tend to sign up to the fan pages of recording companies, organisations or artists I follow who use it to announce forthcoming releases, promotional nights and gigs. It's a more efficient way of getting the information out to followers than a monthly newsletter via e-mail which can suffer from presenting too much information to keep the recipient's interest.

Thirdly, it's an easy way of following the daily lives of good friends and loved ones and those you care about.

In the OP you asked for suggestions on a way to explain the appeal of GEI to a younger audience. I noted you reffered to them as intelligent, that doesn't necessarily indicate maturity.

As a suggestion, perhaps you should ask posters here what the appeal of GEI is to them first, especially lurkers. Know what you have here and then you'll know how to sell it.

Friends with Zerohedge?

Are you a member? I routinely see comment posts after articles with links to elsewhere, I'm not sure where the line is drawn (presumably there is one) but that could be a possible source of new blood...
