Not a hoax. Mars rover photographs Mayan/Aztec style head

Introduction — Jan 1, 2015 Although NASA initially failed to notice it, the Mars Rover has just photographed what looks like clear evidence of the remnants of a civilisation on Mars.

NASA released the photographs taken of the Martian surface without thoroughly scrutinising them. As a result they failed to notice what looks like an ancient Aztec/Mayan style head on the Martian surface. It appears in the photo below. Enlarge the photo, then scroll down on the right hand side and you’ll come across the strange anomaly, which has been isolated and enlarged in the photo on the right. There have long been stories of an ancient human civilisation that existed on Mars. According to GI Gurdjieff, one of the 20th century’s most influential esoteric teachers, Mars had been humanity’s home planet before human civilisation there was destroyed. Thereafter humanity started to incarnate on Earth because, according to Gurdjieff, Mars had been rendered uninhabitable. And note that he didn’t say humanity had been transported here by space ships but that humanity began to INCARNATE here. There is a difference: one is a physical-mechanical process, the other is a spiritual process.

POTATOES CAN GROW ON MARS!

The International Potato Center (CIP) launched a series of experiments to discover if potatoes can grow under Mars atmospheric conditions and thereby prove they are also able to grow in extreme climates on Earth. This Phase Two effort of CIP's proof of concept experiment to grow potatoes in simulated Martian conditions began on February 14, 2016 when a tuber was planted in a specially constructed CubeSat contained environment built by engineers from University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Lima based upon designs and advice provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Ames Research Center (NASA ARC), California. Preliminary results are positive.

 

The Potatoes on Mars project was conceived by CIP to both understand how potatoes might grow in Mars conditions and also see how they survive in the extreme conditions similar to what parts of the world already suffering from climate change and weather shocks are already experiencing.

"Growing crops under Mars-like conditions is an important phase of this experiment," says Julio Valdivia-Silva, a research associate with the SETI Institute who has worked at NASA's Ames Research Center (NASA ARC) and now works at UTEC in Lima. "If the crops can tolerate the extreme conditions that we are exposing them to in our CubeSat, they have a good chance to grow on Mars. We will do several rounds of experiments to find out which potato varieties do best. "We want to know what the minimum conditions are that a potato needs to survive," he said.

The CubeSat houses a container holding soil and the tuber. Inside this hermetically sealed environment the CubeSat delivers nutrient rich water, controls the temperature for Mars day and night conditions and mimics Mars air pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Sensors constantly monitor these conditions and live streaming cameras record the soil in anticipation of the potato sprouting.

According to CIP potato breeder Walter Amoros, one advantage potato great genetic capacity for adaptation to extreme environments. CIP has tapped into that capacity by breeding potato clones that tolerate conditions such as soil salinity and drought, in order to help smallholder farmers grow food in marginal areas that could grow harsher under climate change.

Trump wants astronauts on Mars in first term...

Donald Trump instructed Nasa astronauts to get to Mars within his first term - or failing that, his second term, in a livestream with Peggy Whitson.

He was calling up the Space Station to congratulate Ms Whitson for her record-beating stay in Space: she's been up there for more than 534 days, which was the previous record.

The President congratulated her via video link from the Oval Office alongside his daughter, Ivanka, and NASA astronaut Kate Rubins.

Miami (AFP) - Buried glaciers have been spotted on Mars, offering new hints about how much water may be accessible on the Red Planet and where it is located, researchers said Thursday.

Although ice has long been known to exist on Mars, a better understanding of its depth and location could be vital to future human explorers, said the report in the US journal Science.

Erosion has exposed eight ice sites, some as shallow as a few feet (one meter) below the surface, and going as deep as 100 meters or more, it said.

These underground cliffs appear "to be nearly pure ice," said the report, which is based on data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2005.

"This kind of ice is more widespread than previously thought," said Colin Dundas, a geologist at the US Geological Survey in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The ice contains bands and color variations that suggest it was formed layer by layer, perhaps as snow accumulated over time, leading to ice sheets.

Researchers believe the ice formed relatively recently, because the sites appear smooth on the surface, unpocked by craters that would be formed by celestial debris smashing into the planet over time.

The cliffs are all near the poles, which slip into a frigid darkness during the Martian winter and would not be a suitable site for a long-term human camp.

However, if a sample could be drilled from one of the glaciers, researchers could learn plenty about Mars' climate history and the potential for life on Earth's neighboring planet.

NASA plans to send the first human explorers to Mars by the 2030s.

MUSK ON MARS: SPACESHIP TEST NEXT YEAR

  • Elon Musk held a surprise question and answer session at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas on Sunday.
  • The billionaire said SpaceX is on track to send his Mars-intended rocket on short trips by 2019, but joked about potentially missing the timeline.

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk told an audience at South by Southwest that his timeline for sending a space vehicle to Mars could mark its first milestone early next year.

The privately-funded venture, announced in September 2017, aims to send a cargo mission to the Red Planet by 2022. SpaceX's ultimate objective is to plant the seeds to put a human colony on Mars.

Musk held a surprise question and answer session at the annual technology and culture festival in Austin, Texas on Sunday. The billionaire told attendees that "we are building the first Mars, or interplanetary ship, and I think well be able to short trips, flights by first half of next year."

Mindful of elevating expectations too high, Musk hedged a bit. "Although sometimes, my timelines are a little, you know..." he said to laughter.

SpaceX's BFR rocket system is expected to have capabilities for interplanetary travel, and be fully reusable. A flight will cost less than the initial Falcon 1 flights, which Musk pegged in the $5 to $6 million range.

He hopes if BRF launches, others will believe Mars travel is possible, and follow suit.

Musk Warns Mars Travelers: 'Good Chance You'll Die'...

At South by Southwest, SpaceX Founder and CEO Elon Musk projected that his first Mars spaceship will be ready for short trips by the first half of next year. He did warn, however, that the first travelers to Mars would likely perish.

"For the early people that go to Mars, it will be far more dangerous," Musk told HLN on Monday. "I mean, really, it kind of reads like Shackleton's ad for Antarctica explorers: It's difficult, dangerous, good chance you'll die, excitement for those who survive."

This warning came after a positive declaration: "We are building the first ship, the first Mars or interplanetary ship right now and I think we'll be able to do short flights, short up and down flights, probably in the first half of next year," Musk predicted.

Musk referred to Ernest Shackleton, a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic and died in 1922. Shackleton is famous for putting out an advertisement in Britain's The Times, supposedly reading as follows:

MEN WANTED for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success.

According to legend, this ad received a tremendous response rate — 5,000 men approached Shackleton wishing to risk life and limb for glory.

Is NASA'S Opportunity DEAD? Space agency says Mars rover has 'fallen silent' following a megastorm bigger than North America on the red planet

Flight controllers tried late Tuesday night to contact Opportunity, but the rover did not respond.

The storm has been growing since the end of May and now covers one-quarter of the planet.

Controllers expect it will be several more days before there's enough sunlight to recharge Opportunity's battery through its solar panels.

NASA says the battery is likely so low that only a clock is still working, to wake the spacecraft for periodic power-level checks.

Life on Mars Could Have Gotten an Early Start, 'Black Beauty' Meteorite Suggests

It didn't take long for Mars to become a potentially habitable world, a new study suggests.

The planet-formation process generates a lot of heat, so rocky worlds such as Mars and Earth are covered by oceans of molten rock shortly after they form. Life as we know it cannot get a foothold until these oceans freeze into a crust — and this apparently happened quite early on the Red Planet, the new study reports.

"Already 20 million years after the formation of the solar system, Mars had a solid crust that could potentially house oceans and perhaps also life," study co-author Martin Bizzarro, director of the Center for Star and Planet Formation at the Natural National History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, said in a statement. That's about 130 million years sooner than this key event occurred here on Earth, study team members said.

Mars revisited: NASA spacecraft days away from risky landing

It won’t be looking for signs of life, past or present. No life detectors are on board.

The spacecraft is like a self-sufficient robot, said lead scientist Bruce Banerdt of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

“It’s got its own brain. It’s got an arm that can manipulate things around. It can listen with its seismometer. It can feel things with the pressure sensors and the temperature sensors. It pulls its own power out of the sun,” he said.

By scoping out the insides of Mars, scientists could learn how our neighbor — and other rocky worlds, including the Earth and moon — formed and transformed over billions of years. Mars is much less geologically active than Earth, and so its interior is closer to being in its original state — a tantalizing time capsule.

Organic molecules present in truffles, coal and oil on Earth have been identified on the surface of Mars and may hint at the presence of alien life on the red planet.

These chemicals, called thiophenes, are important molecules as they contain both carbon and sulphur — two ingredients essential for life.

NASA's curiosity rover has identified signs of them on the surface of Mars and astronomers think the most likely source of origin is from biological processes.

Revealed: How a spacecraft will bring Mars rocks to Earth

The plan to steal rocks from the surface of Mars is taking shape.

The first step in this interplanetary heist will come in July, when NASA launches its Perseverance rover to roll around on the Martian surface and collect tubes of dust and rock. Now, officials have laid out exactly how those tubes might find their way back to Earth. It’s a soaringly ambitious, sure-to-be-expensive, international endeavour that involves sending multiple spacecraft to Mars to fetch the precious samples.

If it works, scientists will finally get their hands on rocks retrieved from the red planet in just over 10 years. “What we can learn about Mars in our own laboratories is going to be fantastic,” said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars exploration programme at NASA headquarters in Washington DC, who outlined the plans at a virtual meeting on 15 April.

A little more than one Martian year later, the stationary lander has detected more than 480 quakes and collected the most comprehensive weather data of any surface mission sent to Mars. InSight's probe, which has struggled to dig underground to take the planet's temperature, has made progress, too.

Martian mineral, rare on Earth, found locked in Antarctic ice

Scientists boring more than a mile deep into Antarctic ice have unearthed a mineral that's rarely seen on Earth but found in abundance on Mars, Science Magazine reported.

The yellow-brown mineral, called jarosite, requires both water and acidic conditions to form, according to NASA — conditions that are hard to find now on the Red Planet. Nonetheless, after the Opportunity rover first discovered jarosite on Mars in 2004, the mineral turned up in several Martian locations, leaving scientists to wonder how the mineral became so common, Science reported.

Some theorized that, when ice covered the planet billions of years ago, dust containing the required minerals — iron, sulfate and potassium — may have been trapped inside.

ARS MAY LOOK LIKE AN ALIEN WASTELAND, BUT WE NOW HAVE MORE EVIDENCE IT COULD HAVE ONCE BEEN ANOTHER EARTH

There is a reason Perseverance landed where it did, and that reason goes back at least 3.5 billion years.

Early Mars is thought to have been Earthlike before solar radiation and cosmic other forces killed its atmosphere. This explains why the rover that has now gone viral in the Twitterverse and just about everywhere else touched down in Jezero Crater, which is thought to have once been a huge lake that could have also been crawling with microbial life. Scientists have now found evidence that Mars went through the same phase as Earth before both planets got their atmospheres — something that has not been proven until now.
