A Bad sign? For UK Property

Rents down 0.3% over the year in London, outlook is further falls

Office of National Statistics: Index of Private Housing Rental Prices, Great Britain: July 2018

Not sure what the Enfield statistic is though :-) Interestingly, the most highly leveraged landlords - those in London - are clearly not doing a good job at passing on their tax costs to tenants. The business model of a lot of London landlords is making no money or a loss on rent, but hitting the jackpot with a big capital gain. Let's see how this pans out if prices keep falling

- London house prices fall at the fastest annual rate since height of the financial crisis - London house prices fall in 5th month in row, worst falls since 2009 - London rents dropped at the fastest rate in eight years - ONS - Brexit, London property slump put brake on UK house price growth - Consumer spending declined in July as inflation increased

Zuck's Delusions - he feels like an Emperor - which one?

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ-nEXncXf564MlgL92Kjo: Zuckerberg's obsession with ancient Roman emperor...

... Offers insight into how he runs Facebook

  • The Facebook CEO's idealization of the ancient Roman emperor, who he says made difficult choices to achieve the greater good, may explain some of his decisions.
  • The company pursued growth aggressively, including expanding into foreign nations and giving access to outside developers without putting checks and balances in place.

"You have all these good and bad and complex figures," Zuckerberg said during an interview with The New Yorker. "I think Augustus is one of the most fascinating. Basically, through a really harsh approach, he established two hundred years of world peace."

Like Zuckerberg, Augustus assumed power of his empire at a young age. To attain world peace, Augustus had to make choices "that didn't come for free, and he had to do certain things," Zuckerberg added. But in the end, the Facebook executive believes the emperor was able to achieve a significant period of peace, something that "feels unattainable."

The profile notes that Augustus eliminated political opponents and may have arranged the execution of his grandson.

Domination !

...The Augustus mindset could be one reason why Zuckerberg reportedly led his company to pursue growth at all costs, and used to end some meetings by half-jokingly shouting "Domination!," the profile says.

When Facebook stopped growing at 50 million users in 2007, the executive created a "Growth Team" to focus on getting more users, The New Yorker reported. Solutions included adding more languages to reach out to new territories, as well as asking the Federal Election Commission to exempt the platform from disclosing political ad funding sources in 2011. It also opened its platform to outside developers before putting safeguards in place to make sure user data wasn't misused, according to former operations manager Sandy Parakilas.

Many of these growth strategies have led to Facebook's current issues, including how foreign nations were allowed to sway U.S. elections with manipulative content. Facebook's former security chief recently told CNN he believes the company is not better prepared to deal with these forces than they were during the 2016 election.

Crypto Wipeout Deepens to $640 Billion...

The cryptocurrency bear market plumbed a fresh 10-month low on Monday as Bitcoin’s biggest rival tumbled and U.S. regulators suspended trading in two securities linked to digital assets.

Ether, the second-largest virtual currency, slumped 11 percent from its level at 5 p.m. New York time on Friday, according to Bloomberg composite pricing. Bitcoin declined 2.4 percent, while the market capitalization of digital assets tracked by CoinMarketCap.com shrank to about $197 billion -- down almost $640 billion from its January peak.

Crypto Wipeout Deepens to $640 Billion as Ether Leads Declines

Cryptocurrencies have declined for five of the past six weeks amid concern that a broader adoption of digital assets will take longer than some had anticipated. That worry was underscored over the weekend after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission temporarily suspended trading in two exchange-traded notes linked to cryptocurrencies and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin told Bloomberg that the days of explosive growth in the blockchain industry have likely come and gone.

“The temporary suspension of these products led to an initial knee-jerk reaction,” said Ryan Rabaglia, head of trading at cryptocurrency dealing firm OSL in Hong Kong. “But ultimately, it’s just another obstacle for the market to overcome.”

. . . In a separate report, two financial-technology companies won New York state approval to issue cryptocurrencies pegged to the U.S. dollar, creating more regulated and transparent competitors to so-called stable coins such as Tether, currently the eighth-largest of all digital assets by market value.

The MVIS CryptoCompare Digital Assets 10 Index of major virtual currencies dropped 2.2 percent as of 4:30 p.m. London time, paring a decline earlier on Monday that extended to its lowest level since late October.

Ether has tumbled faster than Bitcoin in recent months on concern that blockchain-related firms are cashing out of the No. 2 cryptocurrency. Many startups that raised Ether from investors in their initial coin offerings will eventually need to sell their holdings to cover expenses like salaries and development costs.

“The rhetoric around ICOs continuing to unload their raise proceeds on the market remains valid,” Rabaglia said. “It’s hard to see how that story line will go away any time soon.”

Don’t Let Today’s Rally Fool You, Markets Are Still Short – Peter Hug

Guest(s): Peter Hug Global Trading Director, Kitco Metals

The markets in general, are still extremely short on silver and gold, despite today’s rally in gold prices, said Peter Hug, director of global trading at Kitco Metals.
“It’s not going to take a lot from a catalyst perspective to create a short-covering rally,” Hug told Kitco News.
On the gold-silver ratio hitting 85, a 25-year high, Hug noted that silver is getting hit from both a general weakness in gold, but also global slowdown in industrial demand.

"It depends on Real Interest Rates"

Frank Holmes: The Biggest Risks Challenging Gold Today

Guest(s): Frank Holmes CEO, U.S. Global Investors

Although gold has historically performed well during past Septembers, the precious metal faces an uphill battle against several key macroeconomic factors, said Frank Holmes, CEO of U.S. Global Investors.
“It all has to do with real interest rates and the concern that rates will continue to rise,” Holmes told Kitco News.
Physical gold benefits from tailwinds, especially from India this time of the year.
However, Holmes expects the dollar to appreciate even further, adding more pressure on gold.
“I’m really amazed that the dollar isn’t higher and that gold isn’t lower,” he said.
On gold stocks, Holmes said that the sector is relatively undervalued compared to the broad market.
“Many of the gold stocks look like a screaming buy compared to the S&P 500,” he said. (show less)

A Hindenburg Omen is forming in the stock market. Should investors ignore it? MarketWatch

MW-GQ123_image0_20180914161602_NS.png?uu

The Hindenburg Omen is materializing in the stock market, raising hackles among some market participants who closely watch for patterns that may portend ill for a stock market that has been knocking on the door to fresh highs.

Named after the German dirigible that notoriously exploded in 1937, the Hindenburg Omen is formulated to predict market crashes, or severe downturns, by synthesizing data, including 52-week highs and lows as well stock moving averages on the New York Stock Exchange. It was created by Jim Miekka, a blind mathematician, marksman and teacher, who died about four years ago. Miekka claimed that his indicator had been an accurate predictor of every market crash since 1987 on.

But as a number of market participants have noted, an appearance of the so-called Hindenburg Omen, hasn’t always resulted in an unraveling of the equity market.

A jump in the number of stocks hitting 52-week lows and highs on the New York Stock Exchange has been a key feature, among others, used to calculate the bearish pattern. Jason Goepfert, president of Sundial Capital Research, highlighted in a recent note cited by Bloomberg News that he has observed a clutch of such high/low moves on the NYSE and the Nasdaq, which can signal a degree of market indecision that can result in a broader market break down.

. . . McClellan told MarketWatch on Friday that he has seen a cluster of 7 Hindenburg instances, including on Friday (before the close), in which 52-week highs and 52-week lows were more than 2.8% of the total of advancers plus declining shares, one key feature of the omen (see chart below):

Frank Holmes: Is It Time To Get Defensive As Ray Dalio Suggests?

Guest(s): Frank Holmes CEO, U.S. Global Investors

The economy is showing signs of slower growth, and now is the right time to switch to a defensive portfolio stance, this according to Frank Holmes, CEO of U.S. Global Investors.
“Global PMIs have turned negative…and historically, that means the economy’s going to be weaker in exports in the next six months,” Holmes told Kitco News.
Holmes noted that gold is still an important asset to add to a defensive portfolio.
Quoting Ray Dalio, founder and co-chairman of Bridgewater Associates, Holmes said investors are at “risk” if they don’t own gold in their portfolio. On his own personal strategy, Holmes adheres to the “golden” rule of keeping at least 10% of his portfolio in gold.
He added that in today’s environment short duration fixed income instruments, like short-term municipal bonds, are very attractive as defensive plays.

Gold Mining Stocks: Top 3 Junior Take-Over Candidates

Here is a list of my top 3 juniors developing projects which may be acquired by a global miner within the next 12 to 18 months:

WDO.t / Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. ... fr. 1/2017 :
xx

Wesdome Gold Mines (WDO.TO): This Canadian focused gold producer/developer has 100% control of a pipeline of projects in various stages of development. The most intriguing being the brownfields Kiena Complex in Val d’Or, Quebec, which is a fully permitted former mine with a 930 metre shaft and 2,000 tonne per day mill. The new management team, which was restructured in September of 2017, has focused primarily on the exploration upside of the projects and the share price has benefitted from this strategy by out-performing the sector since that time. The stock bifurcation from the sector has been due primarily to the excellent results the company has been releasing from its ongoing drill program at Kiena, which is expected to be completed by the end of October. Wesdome has plans to release a resource update on the project by the end of this year. The market has begun to price in the company’s strategy of becoming a 150,000 – 200,000 oz per year producer in the heart of prolific gold camps in both Ontario and Quebec.

AGB.v / Atlantic Gold  ... fr. 1/2017 :
xx

Atlantic Gold (AGB.V): This is another Canadian focused, growth-oriented gold producer, which is currently growing gold production in Nova Scotia. The company’s MRC phase one open pit gold mine declared commercial production in March 2018. Phase two of the mine expansion is planned for completion by 2021 and the company plans to ramp up gold production to + 200,000 ounces per year by 2022 at industry lowest quartile cash and all-in-sustaining-costs. The Phase three expansion drill programs, recently completed at the satellite deposits Fifteen Mile Stream and Cochrane Hill, targeted extensions of mineralization and defined/upgraded inferred resources not included in the 2018 PFS to measured and indicated categories. A phase four corridor regional program commenced in April 2018 and is systematically exploring the + 45km of prospective un-tested structure. The ongoing drill program is targeting disseminated style gold deposits amenable to open pit mining. The stock price has not suffered a harsh correction along with most juniors and management is aligned with shareholders by maintaining control of over 35% of the stock.

PGM.v / Pure Gold ... fr. 1/2017 :
xx

Pure Gold (PGM.V): This Canadian developer is in the process of a definitive feasibility study for the 100% controlled Madsen Gold Project, which is contained in more than 47 square km of contiguous patented mining claims in the prolific Red Lake region of Ontario. Madsen contains a current indicated resource of 1,744,000 ounces of gold (6.24 million tonnes grading 8.7 g/t Au, at a 4g/t cut-off), with an inferred resource of 296,000 ounces of gold (1.16 million tonnes grading 7.9 g/t Au, at 4 g/t cut-off) and is situated close to existing infrastructure. In September 2017, the Company released a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for an underground mining operation which outlined a long life, high margin mine, with low initial capital requirements and an accelerated timeline to production. The company is currently in the process of metallurgical, infrastructure, and development studies and the results are expected in the fourth quarter of 2018, with environmental baseline and permitting updates in progress. Drilling and metallurgical results from satellite deposits Wedge, Russet South, and Fork will be incorporated into an updated resource estimate and initial economic study, on track for release in Q4 2018. These satellite deposits have the potential to positively impact the annual production profile at Madsen. The share price has held up extremely well during the recent capitulation in the gold stock complex and continues to trade well above its 200-week moving average. Management has been steadily buying shares in the open market since the middle of August.

Full disclosure: I own shares of WDO.TO, AGB.V & PGM.V and purchased them in the open market. I have also recommended all three of these companies to my subscribers. I do not receive any monetary compensation, or stock options from any of the companies I invest in, or discuss in my Kitco weekly articles. Please do your own due diligence before purchasing shares in any of the companies mentioned in this article.

A Higher a Low?  Gold needs to get thru $1220

All Signs Point To Upside For Gold - Expert

Guest(s): Todd 'Bubba' Horwitz Chief Market Strategist, BubbaTrading.com

Gold has been trading in a compressed range all week but the yellow metal has a higher chance of breaking out to the upside than downside, said Todd “Bubba” Horwitz of bubbatrading.com.
“This compression torments both the bulls and the bears. Eventually it’s going to break one way or the other and I believe it’s going to break to the upside, and I think all signs point that gold is ready to take off to the upside,” Horwitz told Kitco News.
Horwitz said that although we may not see upward momentum right away, the risk-reward is still skewed to bullish territories.
On monetary policy, Horwitz said that he expects the Fed to raise rates at the next meeting later in September, but gold should not be adversely affected.
“I think that you’re going to see a major selloff in the equities, and rates are going to get away from the Fed and I think money is going to flow into what many consider a safe haven of gold,” he said. (show less)
