Gold, Silver Prices Down Despite Some Risk Aversion

Gold and silver prices are solidly lower in early U.S. trading Monday, and have extended overnight losses. The safe-haven metals are not getting any benefit from an uptick in risk aversion to start the trading week. Instead, both are being pressured by a strong U.S. dollar on the foreign exchange market. December gold futures were last down $12.30 an ounce at $1,193.40. December Comex silver was last down $0.194 at $14.455 an ounce.

World stock markets were mostly lower overnight, with steep losses seen in the Chinese stock market after it was closed last week for a public holiday. Chinese monetary officials during the weekend loosened monetary policy a bit more but that did not stop their stock market sell off. U.S. stock indexes are pointed toward weaker openings then the New York day session begins. The U.S. government, including the Treasury bond cash market, is closed for the Columbus Day holiday today. Canadian markets are shut for the Thanksgiving holiday.

World equities are still pressured by rising government bond yields that are pulling investor interest away from stocks. U.S. stock indexes are in very mature bull market runs that have many wondering if the end is near.

Gold Has Reached The Bottom Of The Cycle, Here’s Why - Frank Holmes

The Barrick-Randgold merger, one of the largest mergers ever in the mining industry, is indicative of an important turning point for gold, said Frank Holmes, CEO of U.S. Global Investors.
“Usually these things happen at the bottom of the cycle, not the top, and that’s really interesting because they start to drive economies of scale to get growth,” Holmes told Kitco News.
Holmes added that many in the industry agree that we have reached peak gold, so investors and miners can expect to see supply shrinking

Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index has lost around 2.5% on a total return basis, so far this year

MW-GR293_slides_20181005115730_ZH.jpg?uu

The Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond index, linked to trillions of dollars of fixed-income, is on track to post its second-worst showing in history.

The index is one of the most widely used barometers for bond-fund managers, and is associated with more than $20 trillion of assets. Its poor performance underscores how fixed-income markets have struggled amid a strengthening U.S. economic backdrop, which has prompted the Federal Reserve to continue to raise rates and consequently driven bond prices lower and yields to multiyear highs.

As of Thursday, the index year to date was down around 2.5% on a total return basis, which takes into account both the value of bonds held in the basket and the yields derived from those assets.

Silver and Treasuries are in the doldrums, making them attractive according to contrarian investing

Various sentiment gauges show that investors hate silver right now. In fact, the masses are so bearish that commercial hedgers are net long silver futures for the first time in 32 years.

PAPER: Break up AMAZON before it does any more damage to America!

When Jeff Bezos announced that Amazon would be raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour last week, the reception was rapturous. The Seattle Times called it “the just thing.”Good for them,” said President Trump’s chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow. “I’m in favor of higher wages.” Bloomberg called it proof that “an even higher minimum wage is probably safe for big, productive cities.” Senator Bernie Sanders, a chief Bezos antagonist, called it “enormously important.” “Unequivocally good news,” said The Washington Post.

The latter is owned by Jeff Bezos, an all-too-easily forgotten point these days. Because for all the questions to follow this announcement — Why now? What is Amazon eliminating to pay for this? How much praise does Bezos, recently crowned the World’s Richest Man, deserve while paying, as of 2017, a median Amazon income of $28,446? — we are not asking the real one.

When did we become The United States of Amazon?
