UK House prices: News & Views

Recommended Posts

No, no access to the welfare state (SE) or the NHS (out of country too long). On my own.

I was a contractor in the UK and would never have used a house there, always lived on site (12 years of that hell), all over the place. UK immigration fought like hell over family moving to the UK, so I gave up with that and built here.

I've known plenty of expats in Malaysia, never a bad word for the place.

Isn't your daughter entitled to a British passport by law?

Yup, still doesn't entitle her to residency. People have turned up with British passports only to be refused entry, they still need visas.

Gave up with it, shithole anyway.

Ok, i thought once the passport was obtained no need for visas, how can they refuse a citizen entry.

Quite easily. 6 months of going to court to get a family visitor visa . . . after that humiliation, you know your country hates you.

Have you seen that Croydon housing benefits thing. 18.4 million quid a month!!!

Me neither - I would like a canal boat or an acre somewhere with a caravan discreetly hidden on it.

Do you remember DYIV? He's a good friend of mine, you know not just on the internet. Well, I said to him to find a nice spot in the world which is stable and likes your passport and save up and buy a house there for retirement, like NZ or somewhere. In the meantime, live cheap, follow the work.

He's a GP in Aus now, doing well.

He pops in to UF from time to time, good to see he is doing well down under.

I think as a Gringo, your political/economic safe havens are pretty much (in no particular order): Canada, Norway, Switzerland, NZ, Aussieland, but none of them might be practical for different reasons.

GF, I don't quite see how Oz is an economic safe haven? Unless one is a high earner, it is undeservedly expensive.

May I plug the southern end of the Grenadine island chain? I recently met plenty of Brits happily living on some of them & they were not all loaded either. Scratch the surface & renting is cheap. Plus the people are the warmest, politest, helpful & genuine I have ever met, anywhere.

I sort of hinted at them on the Costa Rica thread but suffered an instant Bubb dismissal, due to a lack of height above sea level I think? ;)

Well, yes, you don't want to buy a house there, but regarding Australia, I see energy independence (coal) and just a lot of natural resources for not all that many people. And a buyer is also around the corner (China).

Before it is clear how the global warming/cooling thing is playing out, I also wouldn't want to buy anything on a flat island, but renting, why not? I think another important aspect is convenient. When all your friends and family are in the UK, how convenient is it to live somewhere half way around the globe? Even if you can afford frequent flights in peak oil times to come, the jet lag would just put me off.

Lets all live on the South Downs!

as the government embarks on austerity (TBC) HM Govt has now created another wasteful red tape self-generating machine stuffed rlul of "access officers, squirrel counters and carbon footprint monitoring officers!" Brilliant, just brilliant!

I love the UK deeply, and Sussex is a beautiful place, I daresay it's new status a National Park will be another inflationary tool for the estate agent.

The tragedy for the UK is huge regional gap in wealth (the biggest in the developed world) and no means of quickly creating wealth with which to pay off our debt. I have only just realised that we are where we are becuase of socialist, state expansion since 1945.

I believe HPC makes around 300k GBP a year.

Can that be right? I always have the impression that about 20 nutters post all day every day. How does this generate revenue? When I used to use the site I deliberately never clicked on the ads - I would have if the site were run by an individual (like this one) - to help ourtwith running costs and incetivise the owner to keep it going but, once HPC was bought by a software company, I steadfastly refused to click. Even so, it's very rare I see an advert I want to click. I sometimes click just to, as I say, generate a bit of revenue for the owner but I always feel a bit uncomfortable because I know I'm not going to buy whatever is being advertised so the advertiser is paying for a lead he has no chance of converting.

I would have thought 3k would be about right. If 300k is right - I'm clearly in the wrong business. If 300k is right and, given that HPC is owned by a software company, you'd think they'd develop and use their own forum software instead of this awful off the shelf stuff.

That HPC income estimate Sounds high to me.

Perhaps we do not have enough "nutters" posting here

I recall in a thread seeing that someone reckoned it earned £3k a month. Have not since been successful in re-locating that statement. I could have dreamt it and/or it could have been wrong. Hope that helps!

EDIT:

Separately it is "allegedly" worth >$300K (from http://www.evaluateanywebsite.com/)...

TODAY IS THE DAY THE REAL BTL SQUEEZE BEGINS.(Not an april fool joke)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12674409

Housing benefit changes: Who will be affected?

Thousands of families (AND BTL'S) across the UK will be affected by changes to housing benefit due to come into force this week - part of the biggest shake-up of the welfare system for decades.

Ministers argue the new measures, amounting to £2.4bn in savings, are necessary, not only to tackle the rising cost of benefits and the budget deficit, but also to create a fairer system for taxpayers and to provide greater incentives for people to work.

They say expenditure on housing benefit in cash terms has increased significantly from £11.2bn in 1997/1998 to £20bn in 2009/10, and without reform they predict it will reach £24.7bn by 2014/15.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Nl1/Newsroom/DG_192415

Who is affected?

If you are making a new claim for Housing Benefit, these changes will apply to you from this 1 April 2011.

If you are already claiming Housing Benefit, the changes are likely to affect the amount of money you get towards your rent. If you are already claiming Housing Benefit, you may have more time before these changes apply to you.

If your circumstances don’t change, you will continue to get the same rate of Local Housing Allowance as you get now. This will continue for nine months after your local authority next assess your Housing Benefit, after 1 April. The information here will help you work out how the changes will affect you, or you can contact your local authority.

PECENTILE RATES FOR ALL ENGLISH LOCAL AUTHORITIES FOR MARCH 2011 ARE LISTED HERE.........

Be fair - they are nutters. Rational argument and debate eludes them. If you make a reasoned comment on there that does not tow the party line you get called all sorts of things.

Surely posting does not generate revenue? Isn't it clicking ads that generates revenue? I never understand why people use a forum owned by a software company that advertises its own products all over the site.

Only a small beginning unfortunately, many of the proposals don't come into effect for a year or two yet (April 2013 for some).

There is a good round up on the BBC ("in graphics" tab, 12 cuts on 12 pages) that outlines the saving, the dates and the number affected.

Fred Harrison describes how the reckless activities of bankers and property developers have left Ireland in a state of economic collapse with no hope of recovery.

"People tried to make a fortune out of the value of the land... Instead, they bankrupted a nation."

Great summary. Go get them, Fred.

In a few years, they will be telling the same story about the UK.

From the clip:

Karl Deeter: "In effect, it has become a zombie..."
