This is a very nice plot, DrBubb. It gives a nice perspective over a couple of decades.

This is a very sizable volume build up in the last 1 or 2 years without any significant moves. It can be seen in many mining stocks. Please share your thoughts on what might be going on

The price/volume behaviour for some mining stocks resembles the general stock behaviour in early 2009, while others exhibied a very different price/volume dynamics.

  2. Hello DrBubb,

What do you think of this particular stock? From a technical perspective, it looks like it wants to go higher. It hardly has any overhead resistance, relatively cheap, all of the last rises took place on an increased volume. I remember 10 years ago or so, you had a good thread on how to select juniors from different perspectives, and not only technicals. Unfortunately, I could not find that thread recently.

Out of those stocks mentioned in your previous post: OR is the most attractive one. The others are in the downtrend now and I burned my fingers a few times in an attempt to catch the turn.

McEwen loses 16% of gold reserves at Gold Bar

    Kitco News | Jan 7

(Kitco News) - McEwen Mining (TSX, NYSE: MUX) announced today an updated indicated resource estimate of 499,000 contained gold ounces and probable reserve estimate of 302,000 recoverable gold ounces for the Gold Bar mine in Nevada.

Please forgive me if I am wrong, but as far as I remember, a continuous trading range below 1$ on NYSE, can result in a delisting of a stock when it goes to the OTC market. However, this becomes a very different story. Some companies might be willing to find as many positive news in those times. However, on this occasion it did not have much influence on the price despite bad news. I does not satisfy my buying criteria, but I can see that it is marked as a "Strong Buy" at present, so I will be watching it closely.

    VIVA GOLD

    xx

Viva Gold is a new company and management hasn't yet taken the opportunity to totally blow out the share structure. So while they bought ounces of gold for $.05, the company has a market cap of $4.6 million CAD or about $3.6 million USD so investors can buy ounces of gold in Nevada for $8.50 USD.

    Very interesting read, thank you.

I might be overly cautious here, but I would have thought that getting hold of a great valuable asset is one thing, but being able to execute nicely on the production is bound to require a very different set of skills and knowledge for a company whose "principal business is the identification and evaluation of mineral assets for exploration"y and how can one monitor a quality of such execution?

The only thing that springs into my mind would be watching the price action and volumes but the good opportunity might be long gone once the graph becomes more or less conclusive.

    NEXT major Resistance?  About $4.00?

It will be a resistance level, for sure, however, if we try to correlate the current volume levels with the volumes that existed at $4.00-level 2.5 years ago then, I feel,  it might not necessarily be a strong  resistance.

From your experience, what is the "expiry time horizon" for junior miners and for stock in general, when the previous resistance levels can be disregarded? 3 years? or more?

DBA / PowerShares DB Agriculture Fund

Interesting, however, would you consider increasing your position in the agricultural stocks now or would you wait until the deflationary swing played out? The same question stands for the uranium stocks.

Personally for me as a GBP holder, I think, it would make sense to convert an allocated amount from GBP into USD and then leave that cash with my Canadian broker for another 3-6 months and only then purchase these stocks. Any comments on this are much appreciated.

  7. .... I could tell you about the details of what I have done, but it might sound too much like bragging.

Many people on this site including myself would consider this as invaluable learning possibility rather than your bragging. So please do tell us!

As far as the trading discipline is concerned, I would appreciate if you could outline the major rules that one must follow including those rules that you broke last year.

    Many thanks, as always.

  8. I would not hesitate to invest in them only if I knew that they are not out of business in a year time. Either the short time investments or long time is very tempting.

Dr Bubb, what are your thoughts on this?

That was a very very good day for my 'green' selection. Very good indeed..

    Canadian Solar UP 9.0%

    Energy Conversion Devices UP 12.6%

    Evergreen Solar UP 21.0%

    Sunpower UP 15.3%

    Suntech Power Holdings UP 21.3%

    General Electric UP 19.7%

with the mean rise of 16.5%

I have no illusion that these stocks will be falling much quicker than the oil&gas-related stocks once this rally is over

  9. ENERGY USE:

    2050: 28 kerawatts

    2006: 10 kerawatts

differ: 18 kerawatts, to be found

(But that need assumes current living standards and rising population,

if the world goes to US living, it is 102 kerawatts, 90 needed- that's impossible)

    Possible sources:

crops...: 7 kerawatts, if we stop growing food, and grow only energy

    nuclear: 8 kerawatts from 8,000 new plants (1 giga-each)

wind....: 2 kerawatts from windpower covering all the land surface

    The real answer, long term:

The Sun: 800 kerawatts on land mass

I agree entirely, the Earth receives 60,000 times the amount of energy that mankind needs, and therefore it seems as the main power generation option for the future.

I have had a look at the graphs and indicies for the most of the solar energy related companies mentioned in this thread. All of them seem to be grossly oversold at present.

I would not hesitate to invest in them only if I knew that they are not out of business in a year time. Either the short time investments or long time is very tempting.

Dr Bubb, what are your thoughts on this?

I have noticed from the other threads that you are keeping your eye on possibility of re-investing into the semiconductor sector. Although some people are rather sceptical about this sector due to the downturn in auto and electronic industries, I think I now understand that you look at the role that semiconductor industry is going to play in PV solar generation in future. Am I correct in my understanding?

  10. thermal solar is great,

but suffers from being somewhat boring, and in need of alot of messy plumbing

It is not as boring as one might think.

Terresol Energy is commisioning a plant this year: http://www.torresolenergy.com/en/proyecto_gemasolar.html

It is nice looking, fairly compact and generates a sufficient power output to take care of 30,000 households.

I presume it's fairly easy and relatively easy to build one of those plants: 1 sq mile of land, 2500 flat mirrors with stepper motors, trivial small steam power generation plant and isulated tanks for molten salt.

As far as the plumbing is concerned then it will be nothing in comparison to the one used in conventional coal-fired power plants.

  11. Just talked to my usual source who informed me that the gold bottom is in.

If there has been a planned intervention with the goal to supress the price of gold, then they have not achieved much, have they? If they stop lease gold at present then the price will go up above the previous levels in no time.

The PoG has not been brought to the levels that would have sent panic and created the avalanche effect.

Either one does something like this and does it properly or does not do it at all. At present levels I cannot see any point in doing such short-lived intervention. I think it should go at least for another week or two to achieve the desired effect. Time will tell.

    Pick #3 —

PowerShares DB Gold Double Short ETN (DZZ)

This exchange-traded note targets twice the INVERSE of the daily movement in an index that tracks gold. In other words, if gold goes down, this ETF should go up twice as much.

    ...

Forgive me my ignorance but can anyone explain, please, how it can be possible to make ETn(DZZ) work
