Thankyou for expressing your opinion. My silver gold ratio at the moment is 1 ounce gold to 2.5 ounces of silver. Perhaps I need to "fill my boat" as Goldfinger says, with silver. I cant see silver dropping much below $20 so now, I think, is a good time to buy some. Its already been above $21 so it wont be long before its back IMO.

Im undecided, do I buy 15 krugerrands or 568 silver maples for the same fake money? The ratio is 38/1. My gut feeling is to go with silver but it might be harder to dispose of later on. Any one else got a thought on this?

Well hes not far wrong but do you think we will see $30 silver and $1200 gold by spring (May)2008? If so gold will be going up 20% and silver 50% making silver a better buy. Wish I got more phillharmonics!

The prices you are looking at is the price they will buy them back from you. The price you pay is the Brutto price. On silver items you will see there is an ex VAT price also.

I think the Britannia's are the nicest designed coins but I prefer the pure gold colour of the maple although you would have to treat them with care as they are, as you say, softer. Also the alloyed coins tarnish a bit.

Hi Britannia's and sovereigns are exempt from CGT but you get an allowance for £9300 or (£18600 if you get the invoice made out to you and your wife) so you only need them if you expect to make more than those amounts. Krugerrands are generally cheapest (22carrat gold, copper coloured but still contain 1 ounce of gold) maples are 9999 gold so they look like gold. Britannias are more expensive. As for silver, philharmonics and maples are cheapest on coininvestdirect.com. They seems to only charge 9% vat on coins. I phoned ATS on Friday and they wanted £17+vat for a Britannia. I would get a mixture of coins as there are no discounts on quantity, and it would be more interesting for you. The coins are usually well packaged so it could be anything in the box. Books, stone, lead fishing weights etc. Az

I was just reading this bbc article "Q&A-rising world food prices". It tries to explain the reasons but do you not think that it is deliberately not explaining why they are going up? It does not mention the fact that investors are switching from financial investments to commodities. Theres no mention of inflation and weak currencies. As you can tell I'm no expert so what are your opinions? Is the BBC deliberately misleading people to prepare them for what is to come?
