  1. I won those coins on ebay. 180496346655

I think I may have bid too much as I calculated my bid based on the troy ounce price and I now suspect that he has weighed them on the kitchen scales at 44 ounces. What do you think, did I pay too much?

    515.05 for 44oz = 40.10oz

    = 12.84 per ounce

in my experience pre-1920 lots always sell for a fraction over spot, so this is about right

    beats paying the VAT anyway!

  2. Silver is on a run and clearly breached £12 an ounce now. CID have been charging £499.49 a KG for a while now regardles of variations at comex but they have increased the price now to £512.30.

Anyone else bid on the 44 ounces of silver coins on ebay?

    guilty ;)

it was an early bid tho as they were a bit worn

yes i know silver is silver and all that but i am getting more fussy with the job lots over the years

  3. Stone Roses - How Do You Sleep

I've seen your severed head at a banquet for the dead

All dressed up dinner, looked so fine

Your shining silver salver so tastefully powdered

With the finest military quick lime

Now try and picture this, as i gave you a kiss

The apple in your mouth slipped in mine

The orchestra played the sweetest serenade

We laughed as we put away your wine

So raise your glasses, here's a toast to wasted lives

May all their ghosts come back to haunt you

And tell you how they died

    How do you sleep?

How do you last the night and keep the dogs at bay?

How do you feel when you close your eyes, and try and drift away?

Does it feel any better now?

Does it mean any more when the angel of death comes knock, knocking,

    And banging at your door?

When all the fun was over, i put you on my shoulder

Took you home, away from it all

Shot down and claimed, mounted and framed

Tastefully hung up on my wall

Are my dreams your nightmares? i hope they all come true

Get off your knees, the party's over

    I'm coming home to you

    How do you sleep?

How do you last the night and keep the dogs at bay?

How do you feel when you close your eyes, and try and drift away?

Does it feel any better now?

Does it mean any more when the angel of death comes knock, knocking,

And banging at your door, at your door?

  4. I almost posted this a while ago, but I didn't think anyone else would appreciate it. These boys (and girls) are excellent live, all 20 of them... :) I have an interesting story about me and my mates and George Clinton, I just wish I could repeat it here...

    sounds good!

Good song which rates as no 60 on the Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Guitar Songs.

rightly so - it's a masterpiece; a guitar crying out in desperation

  5. I find the lunars a bit naff but like the kookaburras. I must say I don't like the Britts either but do hang onto them hoping one day I will. I do like the Eagles and the harmonicas are popular and well known where I am. I, like yourself, ferret away pre 1920 US (pre 64 actually) 'junk' for historical reasons among other. I would love a British Crown collection though but I'm not going to start now. Crown sized coins seem so 'worthy' to me. Shame I have so few.

I got my first Morgan dollar the other day and a couple of capped bust half dollars, i have to say this could be another wee stash to build on! being UK based though, i miss out on the availability of pre 1964 US coins.

I'm afraid I didn't understand the first part of your post so can't comment. What did you mean?

your previous post started off with 'well for better or worse....', which i took as a comment regarding silvers apparent precarious position according to some on here, but apologies if i was incorrect.

  6. Well for better or for worse I just got a nice roll of silver eagles. And some 2010 pandas and harmonicas.

Gather ye rosebuds and all that...

if predicting the pos was plain sailing, then many commentators (blogs and forums) would be right 'most of the time'; this is far from the case as far as i can see.

i have been slowly adding to my pre-1920 stash of late, i like the old vict. crowns personally. I am also tempted to sell some older lunars as they command quite a premium but part of me says no. For the long term, i am holding onto brits which have a mintage of 100k, less than that of kooks and lunars (300k), but they are not as popular to the global collector as the Aussie coins.

  7. Cool, thanks. Here's something I was told 18 years ago. First a classic.

It was rumoured John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" was written after he lost his cool watching Yoko Ono and David Bowie dance and flirt at a function, it served as his apology to Yoko.

When David Bowie out'd himself in 1972, it was rumoured, "John I'm only Dancing..." was about a homosexual liaison, when in contrast to popular belief, it was David Bowie's reply to John Lennon's "Jealous Guy"...

i wish Yoko would have flirted more if it produced the inspiration for those two songs!

    thanks for the info

  8. I'm suspecting that you're referring to the 'bluenote' nightclub in London. I have gratitude to a close friend of mine who introduced me to MoWax through DjShadow and I was lucky enough to be present at Mowax's last ever residency at the Bluenote in Hoxton Square and can honestly say it revitalised my love of 'clubbing', or at least music related clubbing.

    {Tunes}

    some good tunes there

yep - i was there a few times when Goldie / Metalheadz were present. iirc, Goldie used to have something to do with the running of the place? but i have not been there since 1997/8, so i don't know what the set-up is there now.

  9. I thought I would try something a bit different here and look at the evolution of a song from its European folk roots, which later became a favourite of the famous black folk and blues singer Leadbelly and ended up as a Led Zeppelin classic.

"The Maid Freed from the Gallows" is one of many titles of a centuries-old folk song about a condemned maiden pleading for someone to buy her freedom from the executioner. In the collection of ballads compiled by Francis James Child, it is indexed as Child Ballad number 95; eleven variants, some fragmentary, are indexed as 95A to 95K.

The song likely originated in a language other than English. Some fifty versions have been reported in Finland,[10] where it is well known as Lunastettava neito. It is titled Den Bortsålda in Sweden, and Die Losgekaufte in German. A Lithuanian version has the maid asking relatives to ransom her with their best animals or belongings (sword, house, crown, ring etc.). The maiden curses her relatives who refuse to give up their property, and blesses her fiancé, who does ransom her.

The Led Zeppelin album version of 'the gallows pole' would be my favourite but the live version (performed by Plant & Page before the Led Zeppelin reunion tour) is included here because it is the only one on youtube with lyrics.

The thing about this song which you have to appreciate is that it started off as a ballad about an event that must have occurred at some point in time, so it is quite sad in some respects but also fascinating how it has evolved through time, transcending different music styles and genres.

  10. Yes they are playing 'Song2' by Blur mixed with I believe 'The Push' by the Plump DJ's (don't quote me on that). Whether this is truly being executed live is up for debate but I would have been bouncing about to the forward right of shot with a inflatable monkey on my shoulders and a friend dressed in a Tigger suit getting rather a lot of female attention.

i'm looking forward to giving your latest recommendations a listen tomorrow (when i can add a bit of volume!) - thanks for posting
