You've brought some old memories back of 'yoot' with that post. Used to play the original endlessly though preferred 'Numbers' ................

(the poster has cut this short .......... grrrrrrr)

The above originals were all when I was still knee high to a grasshopper. Electronic music had moved on by the time my interest was aroused by acts like these..............

Collecting records like these and following the 'scene' was what made me very different as a teenager. There wasn't much to do at a weekend ...................... we had a choice of the muzzies (I knew all the reel sequences on 'line-up' and 'options' and generally knew when they were due to pay out), pick a fight with some other kids or go spend the part-time pay in the local rekkid shop. As soon as hip-hop hit the UK, and I like to think I got hooked earlier than most, it changed the whole game for me. Spare time was spent dancing infront of a mirror or with mates trying to perfect a trick so we could battle the 'Out of Town' lads. My poor old mum had tried (on reflection) so hard to save up to buy me a pair of Garrard decks and mixer and all my spare time was spent learning to 'scratch' or beat mix . I got hooked up with a couple of people who loved to paint too and every other night we went out and wrote our names as boldly as possible.

I'm 40 years old now and I STILL get the urge to go out and paint when something or someone p1sses me off. I tend to paint best at those times.

  2. I am able to see how the "breaks side" would want to employ an orchestra within their music, but I’m wondering if the view from the "other side of the fence" could be mutual? Would someone who has devoted their life to an instrument appreciate and want to embrace the break beat side?

For a marriage to work, obviously both parties have to be happy and in love with each other.

From the few people I've spoken to who are classically trained musicians they tend to report that they find playing 'classical' to be very dull but what surprised me most was that they find it really rather easy too. Most of them prefer to play jazz as they say the genre allows them to showboat and/or put their own input into the piece they are playing. I will admit though that the sample rate of people I've spoken to is really rather small but what they said did kind of make sense to me.

I know very little of orchestral music tbh.

Have recently come across Zbigniew Preisner's compositions recently and recommend them highly.

Some have complained about non-investment related threads. This thread is probably the best example and should a vast majority wish it moved eslewhere I as a regular contributor to this thread do not have any objections though where it could be put I have no suggestions.

In it's defence, I have loved this thread and feel it has in some way helped build more of community than just a forum and feel I have connected with other contributors more here than any other thread.

Perhaps somewhere on this site we can discuss other 'arts' too, but each time I post here I do worry that other posters uninterested in 'music' may find it tiresome to have to pass by continuously.

It's Dr. Bubbs site and thought I'd give him the opportunity to make a change should he want to, or at least give his view. :)

  5. Anyway think Underling might appreciate this

Firstly thanks for the 'reggae' post. Do you know who the MC is as he sounds very, very familiar? It's appreciated (not heard before) and reminds me of stuff I used to collect (from the likes of U-Roy, Papa San, Tipper Irie et al. Have largely slept on new dancehall, though always catch the Big Mikey Dread podcast).

When I was a wee lad I was played the WOTW album by a friend's Dad who went on to tell all kind of graphic scarey stories about how the author had predicted this and that and it had all come true etc etc etc .............. . I couldn't listen to the album for years as he had scared the living daylights out of me. (That's Bloody Coppers for ya!)

I sometimes feel that a recording can sometimes be commercially too successful for a fair appraisal. Over-exposure can sometimes be like familiarity and breed contempt which is a shame. As a concept album WOTW must surely stand head and shoulder's above the huge majority both in it's success and it's quality. My personal favourite from the album though I would claim as a guilty pleasure ...................

One of my favourite concept albums is Pink Floyd's Final Cut. Essentially an anti-war album released after the Falklands War, it's lyrics pour scorn on war-mongerers .................

    "Floating down through the clouds

Memories come rushing up to meet now

But in the space between the heavens and the corner of some foreign field I had a dream.

    Goodbye Max, Goodbye Ma

After the service when you're walking slowly to the car

And the silver in her hair

shines in the cold November air

    You hear the tolling bell

and touch the silk in your lapel

And as the teardrops rise to meet the comfort of the band

    you take her frail hand

and hold on to the dream.

A place to stay (a real one), enough to eat

Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street

Where you can speak out loud about your doubts and fears and what's more

No-one ever disappears, you never hear their standard issue kicking in your door

You can relax on both sides of the tracks and maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control and everyone has recourse to the law

    No-one kills the children anymore

Night after night going round and round my brain

this dream is driving me insane.

In the corner of some foreign field the gunner sleeps tonight .............

    What's done is done.

We cannot just write off this final scene

    Take heed of the dream."

I will openly admit I've never really collected guitar based rock and most of what I've collected tends to be more percussion orientated. I've only very recently started to delve a little deeper into 'rock' (mostly 70's) as a choice few DJ's I listen to have introduced me to it by dropping some into their sets. It has inspired me to look further into a genre which by and large I haven't explored ............. it's very difficult to pick the bones out of that genre to suit my tastes.

These must have been the first bands I followed when I was youngster .................

(Note to add that this is the only album of their's I bought. Their version of 'Strange Fruit' is appalling though it did introduce me to the original by Billie Holiday (though for pure production I prefer Nina Simone's version)

If Dr.Bubb ever visits this thread again he might want to listen to this band's music and lyrics. It vocalises and explains very well the mindset of the 'idle'.

    From:

(Saw them play Brixton on their re-union tour (minus Jerry Dammers who for me was the Specials) and nearly got into a ding dong with a group of blokes who were trying to intrude upon my dancing space. It was a gig I was both lucky to see and unlikely to see again was NOT going to give way to them and by Christ was I going to enjoy it!)

The 2-Tone era along with early hip-hop introduced me to so many genres of music. Thought I'd also pay a quick little respect here to the Streetsounds Electro series and it's influence within the UK..............

I only recently realised ( ) that Cybotron was one of the earliest pioneers of 'Detroit Techno' aka Juan Atkins.

I thought some here might also enjoy the eye opener that is the following live mix bearing in mind it's date and what has followed and has been posted here ................

I have the above on vinyl (an album I only dedided to buy at the time as a random purchase but I now gather is extremely valued) which I believe is a rare document on the early UK DJ/Rave era. I would have posted other sections of the album (raggamuffin Beastie Boys, house remix of Stand by Me, Planet Rock vs. Pablo Gad's Hard Times all live) but no youtube link available.

I would love to hear you all elaborate on your how your early influences and how they have effected your musical tastes, maybe even your personal philosophy.

Sorry about what now appears a long post.

It felt like half hour for me. :-)

  6.

    Some nice tunes there.

I sometimes wish I knew someone who had a good knowledge of classical or operatic music to be a mentor as there surely must be a whole loft size pile of stuff that deserves attention (especially piano concerto) and yet sadly I have had very little exposure to. Trouble is with an eclectic taste and limited time, you can often miss out on the hidden gems that someone with an in-depth knowledge of a genre can gain.

    *shrugs*

Ho hum. I guess I get a varied landscape for the journey.

  7. The new GEI RADIO THEME SONG ?

...unless I get a better suggestion

May I take it that you're looking for suggestions? I may have a few for your consideration ..................

I suspect that if you are using a composition as a 'theme' rather than just a one off broadcast you are going to have to gain some sort of permission by the owners of that recording to use it as a theme. (Your identity is well known enough not to be able to hide behind a pseudonym) and choosing something by an artist a little less familiar I would also suspect may be an easier option.

Am I correct to assume like the intro/outro music for CMR you're looking for something gently instrumental or with little vocal that can be talked over?

  8. Dad-rock gonna make a comeback ............................ take it from me ;-)

Been hearing quite a few drops of tracks like these amongst power \'break\' sets since late last year being referred to as \'Dad-Rock\'.

    Primed to go mainstream.

  9. I wouldn't call myself an old git... but... what is all that Dub Step sh1t all about?

I said earlier on this thread that it's a really hit and miss genre, by and large mostly miss for me. I got interested through the likes of Tayo and Freq Nasty but because my interest came from the mix of breakbeats with off-beat skank. Most of it has far too slow a bpm for my tastes as 'dance' music and far too bland for lounging.

My interest evolved out of stuff like this .............

    From:

    (do watch your bassbins!)

Started to get mixed up like this ..............

But this just makes me want to go and make myself a cup of tea in another room somewhere else ................

    From:

But then ..................... I used to get an amazing sense of satisfaction from annoying my mum by playing public enemy. Now that was music in the roughly in the words of the bomb squad ..... 'written in a way that would piss off your girlfriend". Payback time was bound to come round I guess. :)

  10. I'd agree with you SR and wanted to add weight by mentioning that some early keyboards pre-dating the sampler could technically qualify as a sampler in that the sounds produced were recorded onto small pieces of 'tape' which played when a key was pressed.

The piece of technology which really brought the idea forward of replaying a recorded sound came with the floppy disc. By pressing a button you can almost imagine lifting the needle onto a vinyl recording at the required spot, playing the 'sample' then lifting the needle off.

(It is worth noting that the first recognised 'scratch' dj Grand Wizard Theodore was literally doing this manually prior to the sampler in 1980)
