  1. Buying a farm that the previous owners found hard to make profitable seems unwise. I dont know what you would do with it until a change in the cycle comes and makes farming more profitable and the business of higher value.
  2. Thanks for the answer. I quite like farmland as the supermarkets have made it hard to make a profitable farm. Many farmers Ive met have complained about this and some have thrown the towel in. I know an egg farmer and a dairy farmer who recently have done this. How can you sell a farm at a high price if you cant make a living out of it? Jim Sinclair has also recommended this so as to be self sufficient and I am seriously considering it.
  3. Indeed, but what is the next asset class?
  4. Wow, we sure were 100% correct that silver would go balistic and gold was the place to be. Well done all those who did and thanks for the great advice and discussions.
  5. http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/02/21/u...E71K2P020110221 (Reuters) - The Heraeus Photovolataic Business Unit is building a new facility in Singapore to produce silver metallization paste used in crystalline solar cell applications, the company said on Monday. The company, a unit of German precious metals house Heraeus, said the plant will include research and development, manufacturing, sales and technical services, and is expected to being operations in the second half of 2011. The new facility will be Heraeus' fourth manufacturing site of its kind. The company already produces paste for the photovoltaic industry in the United States, Germany and China. Silver use in the fabrication of photovoltaic cells has grown rapidly in recent years and is set for further expansion, metals consultancy GFMS said in its latest industry report on the metal for the Silver Institute. Silver prices have rallied sharply in recent years, reaching a 31-year high at $33.50 an ounce on Monday. Analysts say rising industrial demand for the metal is set to be a key support to the market this year.
  6. Its amazing how gold and silver represent hard work. Both these metals have been viewed as valuable for thousands of years, and with all the advances in mining technology, they are still only available in trace amounts.
  7. And with much more inflation to come, it will be much higher than another $120 when that time comes.
  8. You do not even have to declare anything about sovereigns. So you still get the cgt allowance on top of that.
  9. You must have been listening to Realist bear and Ker. Theres no way gold is going back to $200
  10. I agree, that is exactly what they are going to do. This is why the crunch point for HPC came when you either accepted the gold arguement or rejected it. They rejected it by moving it off topic. Thanks to goldfinger and cgnao and others I seem to have made the right decision. When the massive inflation hits, there will little that can be done to preserve any wealth you have in currency, as the lifeboats of gold and silver and other commodities left long ago. A clue. Why are they replacing coins such as 1p, 2p and starting with the 5p, 10p, with steel versions? To save 10 million a year? Rubbish! It will cost much more than that to change the machines and all the copper and nickel in circulation has not been consumed. The copper coins have been harvested from the population by the bank to recall all that copper, so if anything, its been a good investment as the price of copper has gone up since the mint bought the copper to make the coins in the first place. The coins are being made of steel so that people do not hoard them to preserve their wealth as the metal content of the coins will be worth more than the face value. Will they be able to control the inflation, as history shows that many have failed in the past.
  11. Yes it would. My Dad earnt £2500 a year. If he was still doing the same job he would be on about £18k. Interestingly, that means wages have gone up by 7.2x, the same as gold today (if the price was correct for 1978 not 74) He had a mortgage of 3.5 x and £2500 deposit which is how they afforded the £11,150. Houses have gone up 22 times. She was trying to sell for over £280k and has reduced to £250k. They have been a fantastic investment with a rental income and tax free if you got round the CGT. I cant see how they can continue to be a good investment until there has been a correction in asset prices. I dont think houses are going to crash more than 20% as the banks have an interest in keeping thier values up. The HPC bunch will be dissapointed. Its much more likely to end in very high inflation and gold to £2500 an ounce and the cost of living will go to the moon, followed by wage rises.
  12. My Mum has been clearing out a flat of a old lady she worked for, who has now died. She has found 5 sovs with the reciept dated 1974 when they cost £31.50 each. They now cost £228.50 or 7x more. Interestingly, she bought her house in 1978 for £11,150 and now she is trying to sell for £250,000 which is 22x more. I think think this makes gold look very cheap still.
  13. WTF!!!??? Fake silver panda for sale £40.....LOL... Its like discovering that the krugerrand I bought for £950 was a fake and then trying to sell it for £1500 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2008-CHINA-PANDA-10-...=item2308f829c8
  14. Why silver is the top pick for 2011 http://www.arabianmoney.net/gold-silver/20...-pick-for-2011/
  15. I might buy one as it might be the only one sold (seeing as you lot wont be buying one)
  16. OK, my daughter and I went through my pile of approx 1000 x pre 1947 3ds and picked out the 1920 ones. We then did a tinkle testby dropping them one at a time and listen to the sound they make. The 925 ones make a more brilliant tinkle. Compare other .925 3ds with othe .500 3ds and they have a different sound. They also look different, more grey, not so green.
  17. Thanks, I thought so. Im going to sift through my pile of 3ds and 6ds and see if I can spot the .925 Does anyone else have any experience with this? Warpig, you buy old coins dont you?
  18. An entertaining video with Max Keiser & Mike Maloney In Paris (1/3) http://goldsilver.com/video/Max-Keiser-Mik...y-In-Paris-1-3/ Sorry, I dont know how to embed video.
  19. Are some 1920 dated British coins .925 silver? I have noticed that some 1920 coins have the greenish appearance of pre 1946 coins due to the copper content but some 1920 coins have the grey colour consistant with the higher silver content.
  20. It really bugs the hell out of me that I can no longer buy silver on ebay as the postman will steal it or I have to pay recorded delivery and monitor the parcels state of delivery. I would have to do a sting or investigation type work to catch him out. One of the parcels he stole was signed for and the record shows it was signed for. Fortunately, the losses are not too bad at about £50.
  21. We just left the door unlocked on that occassion. Do you lock all the doors on your house when you are in? I remmeber you telling us about being burgled. At least the wife locked the bathroom door! I recon he has stolen another parcel with a small amount of silver in it. Im going to confront him about it and say that unless my post turns up, I will be going to the post office and the newspaper to report the intrussion. No, I have not heard of this Vince chap. I will look him up on google later.
