  1. Yeah. Maybe we need a SHIFT in how we think about batteries. Most breakthroughs are "outside the box", rather than mere refinements of what came before
  2. What $200,000 Buys in World's Most Expensive Real Estate Market Looking to spend $200,000 for a villa in Monaco? Good luck. For that amount, you'd be lucky to get a one-bath -- as in a single four-foot by eight-foot bathroom. Monaco is the most expensive city in the world when it comes to real estate, according to Knight Frank's latest Wealth Report. Knight Frank, the London-based real-estate firm, said that the average price of real-estate in Monaco was between $5,350 and $5,920 per square foot in the fourth quarter of 2012. /see: http://finance.yahoo...ew_default=true
  3. LOL. You aren't implying that I am a contrarian sort of guy, are you? Well, perhaps I am.
  4. The paleo diet, inflammation and the drug Metformin. I’m going to present what I suspect is the root cause of a host of issues related to inflammation, insulin resistance, cancer, autoimmunity and neurodegeneration; namely intestinal permeability ("leaky gut" in the hippy circles). This is simple in that we may have a common mechanism that underlies all of these conditions. It is complex in that we have a myriad of ways to induce permeable gut and once that happens the ensuing metabolic and immunologic cascades can be tough to keep track of. If you asked me 10 years ago “What’s the cause of all these issues like cancer, diabetes and neurodegeneration?” I’d have hung things squarely on carbohydrates and insulin. But I’ve got to modify things a little: Carbs and insulin are certainly factors, but not in the way we have classically viewed them. With proper vitamin D levels, activity, and in the absence of gut irritating proteins* carbohydrates as a food class may not be damnable. BUT! And please take tracking note of this: if you have a systemic inflammatory condition (most modern folks do), a low-carb paleo diet is likely the best thing you could possibly do to dial down the fires within and get on the road to healing. . . . Metformin is one of those rare “good” drugs that seem to provide significant benefit and at relatively little risk and cost. The reason why metformin works so well is it addresses several metabolic issues simultaneously. It blocks the overproduction of glucose from the liver, improves glucose disposal at the muscles (by improving GLUT 4 phosphorylation…slick!) and it improves fatty acid utilization. If you recall from above, that’s a bunch of what goes wrong in sepsis and since I’m arguing that sepsis is a player in insulin resistant diabetes, it’s important there too. . . . Metformin has interesting pharmacokinetics in that it is water soluble, yet readily passes through the intestinal epithelium with the aid of transport proteins. I’ve been looking to see if metformin has effects on the tight junctions of epithelial cells (Tight junctions keep cells…well, TIGHT! Loss of tight junctions is part of what happens in celiac disease) And I’ve found material indicating action on kidney and liver epithelial cells, not much with regards to intestinal epithelial cells other than the transport mechanism. - See more at: http://robbwolf.com/...h.nYYdCl8U.dpuf
  5. Metformin, the Anti-Aging Miracle Drug Diabetes Drugs Take A BAD RAP You probaby think of Diabetes Drugs as all lumped together as "Bad Drugs". For many years , I certainly did. Perhaps it was the Avandia story that gave Diabetes Drugs a Bad Rap and made us think poorly of ALL Diabetes Drugs. Avandia, the "BAD Drug" for Diabetes Take the case of Avandia, approved in 1999, it quickly became the world's best selling diabetes drug. However, 8 years later, the New England Journal reported that Avandia causes increased heart attack rates, and sales were suspended in Europe.(1A) In November 2011, GlaxoSmithKline admitted they withheld safety data on Avandia and agreed to pay the US government 3 billion in civil and criminal penalties related to illegal marketing. The Avandia case gave all diabetes drugs a "Bad Rap". The reality is that there is one diabetes drug that has stood the test of time, and is in fact a "Good Drug". This is Metformin. Perhaps the plant origin of the drug makes it a "good drug". Photo of French Lilac Plant, the plant origin of Metformin, courtesy of Wikimedia Commons. Metformin, the "Good Drug" Is There Anyone Who Shouldn't Take It ? At the May 2012 Orlando A4M Meeting, Terry Grossman, M.D. from Golden Coloradogave an excellent presentation on Metformin. Credit and thanks goes to Terry Grossman MD for sharing his talk at the meeting with all of us.Much of this article comes from Grossman's PowerPoint slides. Dr Terry Grossman is co-author of the Ray Kurzweil book, Fantastic Voyage. Metformin by Terry Grossman MD- Metformin Discovery and Approval Discovered in the 1920's, Metformin is currently the most widely prescribed anti-diabetic drug in the world, approved for Type Two Diabetes in 1958 for the United Kingdom (UK), in 1972 for Canada, and in 1995 by the FDA in theUnited States, === /more: http://jeffreydach.c...racle-drug.aspx

  8. It looks to me, like we are set for another big downturn in stocks starting this month. I am getting many warnings from my indicators Like this one: It is the RATIO of Liquid Corporate Bonds (LQD) to Treasury Bonds (TLT) and usually leads Stocks lower. In effect, it shows that credit is tightening for Corporations, relative to the US Treasuries - and also shows a flight to safety (away from the "Risk On" trade - being long equities.)
  9. Here are some Good Tips from the foremost Futurist: Very interesting interview with Ray Kurzweil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcNKjxYamgM I disagree with many of his ideas, but I have to admit that he makes a good case, in answering some good questions. But listening carefully, he never really answers the nub of the question (Towards the end of his segment, he reveals some good tips about staying young): Metformin - a Diabetes drug, also good for anti-aging and anti-cancer Main thing: eat less, employ "caloric restriction". Stay young, stay healthy until we can get the new treatments
  10. They also meet for punches, if you see some of the fights that break out on a Saturday night in London
  11. I see it differently. I think something like 40% of the capital needed to build those new developments (Woodberry and the Colindale projects) is coming from Hong Kong and Singapore, where much wealth is being generated - thanks partly to the "Efficient density" in these two cities. And London is copying that model, using its own (less dense) version.
  12. There were big corrections in Canary Wharf. But if you bought the dips, you would have done well.
  13. MIRRORING in stock prices I find it strange, but you sometimes find incredibly sysmetrical mirroring in stock prices Here is an example: HK-12 : Henderson Land ... update If the mirroring continues, then a sharp drop may be next.
  14. Yes, that's an interesting shift. The London Bridge area looks like it could be a real magnet for new money. I think that will become a more important part of London's future. It is usually a good idea to invest somewhere that will benefit from the millions and billions being poured into infrastructure. And there's big spending coming in that part of London. The other areas I mentioned (Manor House and Colindale) are pure gentrification plays, rather than infrastructure-assisted property plays.
  15. My quick suggestion would be to look along the Crossrail line, where you may still find some bargains/ Or maybe at/near these two places, which are showing gentrification, but are still cheap (probably for a reason): + Manor House : http://www.greenener...showtopic=14291 + Colindale : http://www.greenener...showtopic=17050 BTW, when you say: " I recently did a comparison to see how far along the West Coast Main Line I'd need to go before my Watford studio flat (20 mins) became a two bed house" I presume you mean: The value of the Studio was high enough to buy a 2BR House. BTW, what is the value you are talking about? If you post that, then some other folks here can give you some suggestions
  16. You might have done better in HK property, but nevermind if you made money. Have you looked into the US at all? Having said that Sterling and the Dollar may so go into a race to the bottom (with some other currencies)
  17. OR... They will wake up, and run away. China Investment Corp., one of the world's largest sovereign-wealth funds with about $410 billion under management, bought Winchester House, which is leased by Deutsche Bank AG for its London headquarters, for about $400.6 million, according to Real Capital Analytics. CIC has also invested in U.K. infrastructure, including small stakes in Heathrow Airport Holdings and water utility Thames Water. Gingko Tree is wholly owned by a Singapore-registered company called the Investment Company of the People's Republic of China (Singapore), which in turn is wholly owned by SAFE There are many restrictions now in buying property in HK, Singapore, and China. So the wealth being generated on this side of the globe seems to like the UK at the moment
  18. Yes, I am watching that channel too. And many indicators suggest that Gold as at minimum, due a good bounce
  19. Van is right. The Bull market sentiment is endangered by what we are seeing. Still, there ought to be very strong support at $1500-1550.
  20. As you hint: The assumptions could be more interesting than the half-baked forecast
