The Best of Youtube - Music

Recommended Posts

A little bit, held one or two nights in a couple of late night pubs about 10yrs ago "chasing the dream" but to be fair once you have someone depending on you all that changes, and so does the life style.

but at least the income paid for the equipment and never ending requirement for vinyl, but I'm not retiring on it - lol

Happy memories though :)

The whole DJ thing came a bit after my time and so i never really understood what it was all about. We had a band when we were kids......never wanted to be a rock star but just loved the buzz from playing....and i agree, some great times we also had.

My background is guitar music but have got into a lot of the modern dance/chillout/mood stuff in recent years. Thing is, something created by a computer just doesnt feel like "proper" music to me!..(or maybe i am just an old git!..lol)

Trust me, I am now in the "old git" phase - lol

I understand where you are coming from, there was an incredible change in the late 80's early 90's with the birth of the sampler, this is really the key between what is viewed as "Traditional" and "Computer" based music in my opinion.

Music will always be a generational thing, I'm pretty sure anyone in the 30's and beyond just might look back over the last couple of years at the music scene and think WTF has happened, with all the artists now being downloaded instead of the trip to the vinyl store, and the big corporations churning out endless rubbish. (Please keep in mind I may well have a blinkered view on this) everyone will have a golden period (normally their youth) and songs/tracks will trigger memories of both good and bad times as I'm sure you are already aware. Mine was the very late 80's through the 90's ending round the early noughties.

My record collection covers a very wide spectrum, Rock, Grunge, Industrial, Metal, Rap, Funk, Soul, Dance, Electro, Hip Hip, Trip Hop, Dance, House, Techno to name a few. All of them have their highpoints over that period.

However, Breakbeat aka Nu scool breaks was my specialist subject.

Morpheus only covered 4 of the 5 senses though ;)

Just as a guitar, a set of drums, a piano or any other type of "instrument" it's the skill of the operator behind it, A turntable, a sampler and countless sound effects pads (Just like a guitar pedal ;) ) can effect the sound, it's all down to the operator aka the musician. But when both forms of "Traditional" and "Computer" music combine, they can indeed become VERY powerful. And this is a true art form imho.

:)

I'd agree with you SR and wanted to add weight by mentioning that some early keyboards pre-dating the sampler could technically qualify as a sampler in that the sounds produced were recorded onto small pieces of 'tape' which played when a key was pressed.

The piece of technology which really brought the idea forward of replaying a recorded sound came with the floppy disc. By pressing a button you can almost imagine lifting the needle onto a vinyl recording at the required spot, playing the 'sample' then lifting the needle off.

(It is worth noting that the first recognised 'scratch' dj Grand Wizard Theodore was literally doing this manually prior to the sampler in 1980)

Just to briefly bring it back to investment, as it is an investment forum, maybe one of the signs that the "top" is in for the yellow metal would be the re-emergence of OG

Appoligies in advance for the poor quality.... best I could find.

Why did I always skip by this thread I wonder...?

Just picking up on the last few posts... I agree to a certain extent about music changing in the mid-late 80's/early 90's. My thoughts drifted towards a number of artists who play 'traditional' (best I could do) instruments, yet you would still class as electronic (again, best I could do).

IIRC, Brian Transeau is classically trained. His albums really are a good journey. Also, doesn't Moby play loads of instruments?

Can't find anything at the moment but Drum n Bass with 'real' drums and 'real' bass is a good listen. Actually, hang on...

I wouldn't call myself an old git... but... what is all that Dub Step sh1t all about?

I said earlier on this thread that it's a really hit and miss genre, by and large mostly miss for me. I got interested through the likes of Tayo and Freq Nasty but because my interest came from the mix of breakbeats with off-beat skank. Most of it has far too slow a bpm for my tastes as 'dance' music and far too bland for lounging.

My interest evolved out of stuff like this .............

(do watch your bassbins!)

Started to get mixed up like this ..............

Stuff like this I can bear ............

But this just makes me want to go and make myself a cup of tea in another room somewhere else ................

But then ..................... I used to get an amazing sense of satisfaction from annoying my mum by playing public enemy. Now that was music in the roughly in the words of the bomb squad ..... 'written in a way that would piss off your girlfriend". Payback time was bound to come round I guess. :)

Been hearing quite a few drops of tracks like these amongst power \'break\' sets since late last year being referred to as \'Dad-Rock\'.

Primed to go mainstream.

And the inspiration possibly ..................... ?

After having the pleasure of travelling around the Ring of Kerry, and seeing what I can only describe as "THE" best scenery IN THE WORLD, I'd like to pay my respects to those very fine Irish People who not only extended the warmest of welcomes to myself any my family but made me feel privileged to have shared the craic with them :)

The new GEI RADIO THEME SONG ?

May I take it that you're looking for suggestions? I may have a few for your consideration ..................

I suspect that if you are using a composition as a 'theme' rather than just a one off broadcast you are going to have to gain some sort of permission by the owners of that recording to use it as a theme. (Your identity is well known enough not to be able to hide behind a pseudonym) and choosing something by an artist a little less familiar I would also suspect may be an easier option.

Am I correct to assume like the intro/outro music for CMR you're looking for something gently instrumental or with little vocal that can be talked over?
